Hello out there.

I'm very new to Lucy history and sorry if any of my questions in this thread come off as dumb.

My first question is, how did fishnets end up all over the wreck? At first I thought they were just lost nets that landed on the wreck, but are they there for another reason? I've been reading through these threads how the wreck was used for hiding, target practice, a lot of different things. Were the fishnets somehow meant to hide the wreck? Any info as always will be appreciated.

Thanks all!

>>My first question is, how did fishnets end up all over the wreck?<<

Nothing particularly remarkable or sinister about fishnets on the wreck. The Lusitania, like a number of vessels which went down in reletively shallow waters also went down in some popular local fisheries. As a consequence of this, nets from commercial fishing vessels occassionaly get entangled in the wreck. This is not unique to the Lusitania by any means. Other wrecks such as the Andrea Doria have them too, and it's common enough that divers have to be wary of them as a possible hazard.

I remember seeing a special some years ago where they showed that the fishing nets were still catching fish that wandered into them...

Sometimes, those nets catch divers as well, and if you're not careful about what you're doing down there, you could easily end up as another unfortunate statistic. It just goes to show that wreck diving is no game for amatures.

Yep, while wrecks fascinate me (in part that is the genesis of the superman thread) - in real life I can never see myself doing any serious wreck diving - I certainly can live without the china from the Doria...
