I thought I would attach some photos of a porthole that was salvaged from the Lusitania back in 1982. It was part of the mailroom and I believe the salvages used cutting torches to try to gain access to the room - You can see round the edges where the part of the plate has been cut away from the rest of the hull. Imagine anyone doing that these days! Thankfully laws now protect the wreck from similar sorts of dubious ventures. The piece itself weighs in at a hefty 100lbs - Incredible to think it was part of that mighty vessel and lay with her for nearly 70 years. The glass to the port has shattered though still firmly in place. I wonder if that happened when she hit the sea floor or at a later date when the Navy used her as target practise back in WW2? – There is also still evidence of part of a rubber seal to the porthole and it still swings freely after all these years. I feel honoured to be able to be custodian of this piece and it’s something I will treasure for many years. It really brings home the tragedy of that day back in May 1915 and I just wonder who the last person was to look out of that porthole that day…. |

Thanks Eric It's good to be able to share pictures of this to a wider audience - makes it somehow a virtual museum! The porthole really does bring home the violence that was inflicted on that day. Very humbling to have this in my care. |
