On the Daily Telegraph's web site today, (6th of June, 2003) it reads "The last survivor of the sinking of the Lusitania, which led to America entering the First World War has reportedly died at 92 years" it continues "A report in The Times says Eve Pugh was six when the transatlantic liner, nicknamed the Queen of the Seas, was torpedoed off the Irish coast by a German U-boat. The attack happened on May 7, 1915."
It ends with a brief history of the sinking.
Is it true the newspapers & press are unaware of Barbara McDermott & Audrey Pearl? has anyone else read of this?

Matt asked: "...Is it true the newspapers & press are unaware of Barbara McDermott & Audrey Pearl?..."

Obviously. Being in the news biz, I can tell you from experience that what we in the press don't know, and that's a lot(!), we usually get wrong, as is indicated by the glaring Daily Telegraph error. I used to contribute to AP and know they made mistakes constantly. It's the nature of daily reporting with deadlines. No time for fact checking; shouldn't admit it but it's true.

Why wasn't Eve Pugh a well known survivor if she really was on the Lusitania?

fact or fiction, fiction as fact, as long as it sells

Yvonne Marichal Pugh was probably not that well known because she never discussed the sinking publicly. This is just like third-class passenger Arthur Scott, who was also "unknown" until very shortly before his death because he didn't care to discuss the sinking.

Has anyone got a passenger list with Eve Pugh on it? And if so, why has the press heard of her if she was never mentioned or known by lucy buffs?
Sounds a bit odd...

Matt:

You won't find Eve Pugh on a passenger list because her name at the time was Yvonne "Eve" Marichal.

You also wanted to know why she wasn't known by Lusitania buffs but the press had heard of her. Probably because, as I mentioned, she never discussed the sinking publicly. After her passing, her family let the press know that she had been on board. Odd? Not really. L

Dear Matt, as far as I am aware, Yvonne Marichal Pugh died in Hereford, on 15 September 2001, aged 92. Hope this helps.

Best regards, Filipe

I'm just a 'listener' on this list but the mention of Hereford, which is
where I live, caught my eye. There's a report from our local paper, the
Hereford Times, here:

Some of these reporters sure do not go out of the way to do any research. Thanks Jeff for posting this article.

A little more on Yvonne Marichal.
She was travelling on the Lusitania with her parents, Mr & Mrs. Joseph P. Marichal and her brother and sister, Master Maurice and Miss Phyllis Marichal. They were booked into 2nd Class and according to my complete Lusitania passenger & crew list, they all survived. It also states they were from Kingston, Ontario.
