A few weeks back i was watching the simpsons. On it Bart and Lisa were on a party boat with a whole lot of old people when the boat suddenly collides with Mr. Burns yacht and starts to sink. A man tries to rescue the boat by grabing a rope tied to the boat and swiming for the shore, intending to beach the boat. However all he succeeds in doing is breaking the boat in half, carrying the front half with him while leaving the back half with all the people on board behind. The back half floods and goes vertical, then goes under the water, like the Titanic. Of course, no one dies as the back half comes back to the surface due to there being loads of springs on the seabed which pushes it back up. To read script go to http://www.snpp.com/episodes/AABF16.

There are a few Titanic references I've noticed in The Simpsons, Jack, although I haven't seen the episode you mention above. In one, the characters are watching a version of Titanic on tv ('now I can get out of this stifling bikini!' declares one well-endowed starlet in a rowboat, before the ship launches itself out of the water again, complete with a Jaws-like row of teeth). In the opening credits of one episode, the family race for a floating couch only to have a passing iceberg drift past and sink them. |

Also has anyone seen the episode of south park where it's independence day and as part of the celebrations south park is planning to light a giant snake (don't exactley know what that is). Kyle, Kenny, Stan and Cartman are part of the orchestra that preforms at the event. After the boys play "the star spangeled banner" (which sounded terrible) the crowd lights the snake. However, the plans backfire with the snake going out of control and killing everyone. The "titanic" part is with chaos unfolding around them, the boys begin to play a tune. The tune happens to be Nearer My God To Thee (which also sounded terrible). |

I did see the reference you just mentioned Inger (the one where titanic comes back to life). Did you notice how the two people in the lifeboat looked a lot like Jack and Rose? |

Related to the Simpson's Titanic reference, Futurama by the same people had a complete episode paridying the 1997 JC movie. It is in series one and is titled 'A Flight To Remember' and it deals with the maiden voyage of a new Starship Titanic. The roles of Jack and Rose are played by Bender (in Steerage) and a nice Lady Robot in first class. Ships captain Zap Branigan Decides to liven the cruise up by taking the Ship through a field of comets, The Icebergs of the sky. One of the funniest episodes of Futurama made. Check it out at:- http://www.gotfuturama.com/Multimedia/FrameGrabs/1ACV10/ |

I've had this mental image of Homer as Murdoch, on the bridge when the three bells ring. An overhead view from the height of the second funnel, as the iceberg strikes, and we hear First Officer Homer say "D'oh!" Yeah, kinda twisted, but that's the way my mind works. What can I say? |

ok, lets take that one step farther, how about putting Barney (the drunk) up in the crows nest, Mayor Quimby as Bruce Ismay, Mr.Burns as Ben Guggenheim and Mr.Smithers as his manservant? |

Whoa Dave, This is getting silly, obviously Barney being in the crows nest would have helped, his humungous burps would have set up echos from the offending ice berg and warned everyone. Monty Burns would have been trying to get money off the passengers for keeping the lights on - as is his wont, Smithers would have stayed by his side and gone down like a gentleman. As for Mayor Quimby ..... Yes I think you're right. Happy New Year Best Wishes and Rgds Dennis |

I reckon Lisa would be good as Thomas Andrews. She'd be the first to figure out that the ship would sink. What about Captain Smith? |

Auto the bus driver would make a good Captain Smith. He played the Captain in there version of King Kong it was called "King Homer". He was the captain the ship that took Mr. Burns to ape island to capture a giant ape. |

I think we need to contact the creators of The Simpsons and get them to make this episode! As for other cartoon references to Titanic, I saw one once via Nickelodeon. I don't know if any of you have ever watched that show Rugrats, but I caught an episode once where they took a trip to some place that resembled Sea World. There was an enormous model of the ship in one of the areas of the park. The entire park eventually flooded because the babies managed to break the fish tanks. When the water came spilling into the room where the model was, the babies and their parents all clambered onto the stern. The model dove bow-first, broke in half, and then sank.
All the best, -B.W. |

I think I'll revise my original Casting. Instead of having Barney as the lookout, he should play the Baker Charles Joughlin, drunk and hanging off the fantail as the ship sinks. Lets put Homers' friends Carl and Lenny up in the crows nest. They would be arguing over something trivial and not see the Iceberg! |

>>I also think Captain Mcallister (who runs an oil tanker aground in an episode) would be good as Captain Lord on the Californian. << Bad comparision for two reasons. 1)Captain Lord was not drunk whereas Captain Mcallister was at least past legal minimums. 2)Californian prudently stopped after a heart thumper of a close call with the ice. Bruce Quimby: When do we get underway, dammit!!!! Lisa Andrews: That's five compartments, sir! The water is coming in at up to seven tons a second while our pumps can only pump out 1800 tons per hour! The watar will rise up, go over the tops, flow forward as we go down by the head, flow back into other compartments, impose bending loads of up to 66,000 pounds per square inch leading to eventual structural failure of the hull girder, the collapse of the mid-section and the foundering of the ship! I am a Titanic buff first... A Beatlemaniac second and a Simpsons fan third..... Timothy, your image of Smithers and Mr Burns by the grand staircase is quite funny... Shouldnt there also be a shot of Homer there, totally out of place, eating a large sub sandwhich, as horrified gentlemen in tuxedos look on? The one Titanic scene I recall in the Simpsons was during the opening sequence, or the 'couch trick' as they call it. The family sits on the couch, which suddenly hits an iceberg and sinks... Plus there was an episode where an old politican who died was said to be a Titanic survivor... regards Tarn Stephanos |

I know there are quite a few Titanic references in the Simpsons: the sinking couch; a ship breaking in two and the stern staying afloat; Captain McAllister's (that's his name right?) ship hitting a rock (with a hard'a starboard order, right?); but I didn't know the one about the politician. The Simpsons' Titanic references remain funny, imho, because they try to have a laugh at the James Cameron movie (or at the the impact of this movie on popular culture) rather than at the event itself. regards, timothy ps: if I find the time, I'll have a go at a Homer-with-sandwich-in-the-smoking-lounge image |

Dear Tarn, all, A copyright violation? In a way, of course, you're absolutely right. But on the other hand these (entirely unofficial) pictures were made just for fun; I didn't made them for profit or personal gain, quite on the contrary; they might be considered a sort of tribute to the continuing popularity of the Simpsons (and of the Titanic disaster in popular culture). Of course I don't want to damage the reputation of this site or forum, so if anyone else considers this illegal, perhaps these pictures should be removed(?) regards, timothy |

Timothy, I personally don't mind them, but the people who own the rights to The Simpsons just might. Phil Hind made his concerns clear in the Encyclopedia Titanica/Message Board Information folder where he announced the revision to the rules. It is treading mighty close to the line. Sorry I know this thread has been dead for a while now but i couldn't resist posting this. Hypothetically, if the Simpsons creators did make a Titanic episode, parodying the Cameron film I think the casting would appear something like this: Jack: Homer Rose: Marge Cal: Mr. Burns Ruth: Patty/Selma (Their strong dislike of Homer matches perfectly IMO with Ruth's opinion of Jack) Molly Brown: Maude Flanders Fabrizio: Barney Lovejoy: Smithers Captain Smith: Chief Wiggum (nothing to do with the real Captain) J. Bruce Ismay: Mayor Quimby (same, nothing to do with the real one) Thomas Andrews: Lisa If I think of any other characters, i'll fit them into the episode in some way, there are still heaps i want to put in. >>Somehow, I just can't see Smithers as Spicer Lovejoy. It's just out of character for the boot licking toady!<< Yeah, neither can I really, but this is comedy. I don't think any of my selections are in character with the roles i've given them, especially Homer and Marge, acting as the main protagonists (although i have come across a picture of Homer and Marge in the "i'm flying" position on the Internet). As you've probably figured out, i've just drawn parallels from the tv show with the characters in the movie, such as Mr. Burns/Smithers, Cal/Lovejoy.
