Link to a discussion paper on shipwrecks and chivalry (bit heavy but quite interesting)

>>Chivalry, he concludes, ‘helped keep England free from political rancour and war between the classes,...<<

Huh? On what planet?

>>This paper challenges this account of chivalry amongst Edwardians and Victorians.<<

Oh. >whew< So, he's going to take a trip down Reality Lane after all.

Well, this one, Michael ... it could have been a darn sight worse! We didn't have a French or Russian Revolution, or a Paris Commune, after all. I think the man has done his best, all things considered and he doesn't sound in the least romantic to me. But then I always end up looking on the bright side of research papers .. if I didn't ...well I think I might get a bit downhearted!

Mmmmmmmm...yeah....that charming party where the locals retired their nobility with the haircut that doesn't grow back! At least they didn't have to worry about their pension plans.

I went ahead and bookmarked that paper for further reading. Skimming through it however, it looks like he destroys a lot of cherished myths. At least with a lot of the shipwrecks he mentioned, he goes to some pains to point out that "Women and Children first" often took a back seat to the "I'm going to get on that lifeboat and get the Hell off this thing and everybody else will just have to take their chances" approach to doing business.
