As to the mistakes and why they were not fixed in the McCluskie book - as far as I am aware there was only one edition ever printed, although it was offered by a few different publishers in different markets. There never was a revised edition, hence no opportunity to correct the goofs. Michael Titanic Book Site.com

Hello everyone, I don't know if anyone can answer this, but I'm very confused. I've just finished reading "Titanic and Her Sisters," and I've noticed the book has made A LOT of errors. First off, everyone on here is basically saying that no pictures of Titanic's grand staircase are known to exist, yet in the book, there is a very scruffy distorted picture of the very first landing of the staircase and upclose of the cherub, and the book states it to be TITANIC'S. My teacher lent me the book and said that he had met Robert Ballard and had confirmed that it was a picture of Titanic's Staircase. This brings note of another question. The book depicts two different clocks: Honour and Glory, and then a simple square one. The book states that the Honour and Glory one was carved specifically for Titanic, and that the simple square one was Olympic's. THIS CANNOT BE TRUE, because I am well aware that the Honour and Glory clock from Olympic still exists. Another mistake the book made was when it referenced the dining saloon and the reception room. The book displayed a weird looking room and said that it was the "RECEPTION" room leading into the first class dining saloon. Has anyone else caught these errors, because it annoyed me a lot when I was reading the book that I really was looking forward to but then was suddenly lied to like 5 times. [Moderator's Note: This message and the two which follow, originally posted to a different thread in another topic, have been moved to this pre-existing thread discussing the same book. MAB] |

'Titanic And Her Sisters' is only good for the extensive photo selection- but the text and photo captions have so many mistakes and glaring errors, very little written within that book can be trusted. As a photo refernce, the book is excellent- but the text is useless. I have never read a book with as many glaring text errors as 'Titanic and Her Sisters'. Were it not for the excellent photo selection, I'd suggest the pages of the book should only be used to wrap fish, or line a birdcage. |

I'm not that much of an expert on the ships' structures, but I picked up about 30 errors in the photo captions alone. One good clanger is the photo of the 'turbine casing'. It's actually the wooden pattern used to cast the casing. The notorious photo of Olympic's officers captioned as the officers of Titanic is also there. It's all a bit much! Hi Anthony, to answer your question about the clocks, the square one would have been from the aft grand staircase, which was between funnels 3 and 4 on Olympic and Titanic and didn't descend as far into the ship as the forward grand staircase between the first and second funnels. Both Olympic and Titanic had the Honour and Glory clocks on their forward grand staircases. Hope that helps. I've also been frustrated at the errors in this book. It's unfortunate because with all the photos the book contains, more accuracy would have made it a really outstanding work. Take care, Russell |
