A sad day for the whole Titanic world. Millvina would want us all to treat tomorrow as new day. My sincere thought's are with her life long friend Bruno. She was one off, and she has left us with many fond memories. God bless her! Andrew Williams

How odd that she passed exactly 98 years to the day that Titanic was launched. Steve

Sad news indeed but at least she enjoyed a long life and died pain-free, in decent surroundings and with her mental faculties intact. What more could we wish for her? She had Titanoraks pretty well nailed too: quote:"I think sometimes they look on me as if I am the Titanic!" she said after a visit to a Titanic convention in America. "Honestly, some of them are quite weird about it."
RIP to a lovely lady. Peace and noodles http://www.venganza.org

This, I believe, will be a great place to share our favorite stories and memories about Millvina Dean, who died this morning. I have some wonderful stories to share, and which were shared with me, by Millvina. [Moderator's Note: This message and the two below it, originally a separate thread, have been moved to this pre-existing thread discussing Ms. Dean and her death. MAB] John Clifford

For me, great memories of being with Millvina included seeing her at the THS Conventions in 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, and 2000. In 1996, at the Belfast Convenion, I was thrilled to escort Millvina on to the HMS Caroline, for a pre-dinner reception; In 1998, at the Springfield Convention, I stayed with my cousin and her family, in Connecticut. The day before the Convention I took my uncle up to Indian Orchard, and he had a great time meeting with Ed Kamuda and Ed's sister Barbara. Then, after lunch I returned to the THS Museum, this time with one of my mom's former schoolteachers, who, now retired, also lived in Connecticut. During the afternoon visit, my mom's former schoolteacher, Mrs Ricci, got to everyone, Ed & Karen Kamuda, Barbara Kamuda, Don Lynch, and finally Millvina Dean and her companion, Bruno. Mrs. Ricci, who was a year-and-a-half younger than Millvina, was thrilled to meet her, and listen to Millvina answer questions. She later told me, my mom, my cousin, and just about everyone else in Connecticut, about how great it was that afternoon, that we could not have planned things any better. John Clifford

Two stories Millvina enjoyed sharing, both related to interviews she gave: 1. A Japanese group was doing a Titanic documentary, and included an interview with Millvina. As part of the interview, Millvina agreed to do a Japanese bow greeting, but that gesture had to be filmed several times. Her companion, Bruno, was bemused to see her and this interview trying to properly greet each other and 2. For another documentary, Millvina was interviewed at her home. Just as the recorded interview began, one neighbor started mowing the lawn. Millvina was asked to talk to her neighbor and have him stop mowing the lawn; she declined, so someone from the film group went and made that request. Then, the other neighbor began playing loud music. Millvina was asked to talk to her neighbor and have him stop playing the music. Again, she declined, so someone from the film group went and made that request. Then, the interview began, and an airplane flew directly over the flat. Millvina's reply was "Now, there's absolutely nothing we can do about that". John Clifford

This is very sad news. And it is also the anniversary of something or other to do with Titanic if memory serves. R.I.P. Eric in NY Mauretania 07 photographs/memorabilia/postcards buy/sell. Image restoration. magikbilly@yahoo.com

My other stories: April 1997: After the THS Convention, Millvina and her companion, Bruno, joined several other THS members for a 7-day cruise to the Mexican Riviera. When their ship got back, I, along with Don Lynch, met Millvina, Bruno, and the Kamudas at the Port of Los Angeles. I was assigned to take Millvina and Bruno to LAX, that afternoon, for their flight to London. However, before we went to the airport, I took Millvina and Bruno to meet my parents. The five of us had a very pleasant visit. One thing my mom especially remembered was when Millvina mentioned how, here in Los Angeles, a big highlight is to see where many of the famous entertainers are now buried. That was one part of a THS coach tour at the Convention. Millvina's reply was "Well!! At my age I do my best to avoid cemeteries"!! My mom's thought was "Atta girl, Millvina"!! Then: August 1997: I was one of about 20 persons on the QE2 crossing, with Millvina. After I got home I wrote a story called "Barley's QE2 Story", derived from a stuffed dog that I bought, aboard ship, as a birthday present for my nephew, who was about to celebrate his first birthday the day after I got home (my family, though, decided to have me give the stuffed dog to my nephew as a Christmas present instead). My story recounted the crossing, albeit with several fictional moments, and Millvina the center of attention. Millvina wrote back, after I sent her a copy of it, and said "Such a wonderful story. I can read it over and over". Millvina was also a joy to talk to, during two coach tours, in 1998 through Ireland, and in 1999, in Quebec. BTW, Millvina did note that she received an invitation to see a special screening of James Cameron's TITANIC, in London. She declined the invitation. She was then notified that "Prince Charles will be at the screening, and he would really enjoy meeting you". Millvina's reaction was "I don't care if the entire Royal family will be there!! I will not see that film"!! John Clifford

I am now going to the 5:00 PM Mass at my Church. I will offer my prayers for Millvina. Then, tonight I will offer a special toast, just like I did for her birthday: "TO MILLVINA". "Sweet Dreams, Great Lady". Rest in Peace. John Clifford

I first saw the thread this morning before Church but refused to believe it. But now, at 5:13 p.m. after having confirmed it on Wikipedia, I'm forced to realize that the last Titanic survivor has passed on. I still can't really comprehend it. It's a sobering thought to think that not a single person now walks this earth who set foot on the great ship Titanic. And so it ends. Rest in peace Millvina, with your family and the father you never knew. I hope you have found happiness. Know that you will be missed by every member of this message board. |
