I've read conflicting accounts with regards to the clock on the grand staircase (the ones crowned by honour and glory) one account with (I believe it is Titanic a journey through time by John P. Eaton and Charles A. Haas) states that there was no clock, only a mirror because they hadn't finished the clock in time for her maiden voyage and were going to insert the next time she was in england. Has anyone else heard about this?

Hi, Sarah!
In the book Titanic Voices, it was said that when Titanic left Belfast, the clock face was not installed, and a circular mirror put in its place until the clock could be placed. There are no known followup writings about it that I have seen, but since Titanic was tied up at Southampton for a week, almost certainly the centerpiece of the grand staircase was delivered dockside. Titanic was not 100% complete by the time she left Southampton. For example, period photos show missing handrails outside the gymnasium, and Thomas Andrews was taking notes throughout the voyage on things that weren't 'up to snuff' yet.

Hope this helps,
Dan C.

Hello!

I have heard of plumbing fixtures still in crates in 2nd class, much to the annoyance of those passangers! Exactly who, sorry, can't remember.

About the clock: I would think there would be more testimony regarding THE clock with no face in survivor accounts. Would sort of stand out? Of course, the carving-relief work was what was most impressive; the face rather small in comparison. Maybe nobody noticed?! :-)

Take care-
Kris

My thoughts exactly, Kris--unless someone had seen the Olympic's staircase, how would they know that a clock was supposed to be there?

There were clocks located down on B and C decks, so A-deck would just make sense. Basically there was a clock on each level (besides D-deck which was in a totally different style of room).

With a small hole in the centre of some large decorative panelling there would defainlty show that some thing was missing there that should of been installed. If the desingers were planning to install a mirror on top of the stairs, wouldn't they make a more larger mirror, than a small tiny one in a wooden carved circle?

But I agree with most others statements, the clock was proably installed. Daniel Klistorner mentioned also that passengers were checking there watches with ships time using the clock surronding the Honour and Glory panelling.

Best,

Nigel
