I caught this one yesterday and posted the news along with the link in the Museum News thread I have going. The Mary Rose also benefitted from this to the tune of £21 million. This is good news because both were under threat for want of funds.

More details on this story at The Shipping Times. According to the article, the Cutty Sark Trust now has £30 million of the £35 million needed to achieve their goals.

From The BBC:

'Major milestone' for Cutty Sark

quote:

Restoration work on the Cutty Sark which was ravaged by fire almost a year ago, has reached a "major milestone".

A seven-tonne iron counter, a large and delicate part of the ship's stern, was lifted by crane from the rest of the ship, said the construction team.

Comment: It's good to see that everything is coming together here...literally.

From The Evening Standard:

Shipping magnate saves the Cutty Sark with £3.3m gift

quote:

The Cutty Sark has been saved, thanks to an 86-year-old shipping magnate.

It was announced today that Sammy Ofer, a Romanian-born Israeli who served with the Royal Navy as a young man, has given £3.3 million to complete the renovation of the 1869 clipper in Greenwich.

The gift - the biggest to the project - comes three months after Mr Ofer, who lives in Monaco, gave £20 million to the National Maritime Museum.

From Sky News: Devastating fire not down to arson. That's something I suppose.

Although the fire aboard the Cutty Sark was caused by an industrial vacuum cleaner that had been left plugged-in by the restoration team, the report also highlighted the fact that the night watchmen were asleep and had falsified their records. There was also adverse comment about the fire alarm system aboard the vessel.

The trust got lucky. That the ship is even recoverable is nothing short of amazing. Had this happened with the restoration nearly complete instead of with most of it off site for restoration, this story would have had an unhappy ending.

I sure hope they clean up their act in the wake of this. Carelessness with industrial safety is not a luxury they can afford.

From The Cutty Sark Museum website:

Re-opening 2011

quote:

The ship was originally due to re-open in 2009 but Cutty Sark suffered a major fire on 21 May 2007 which resulted in a 14-month delay on the project and significantly increased costs. Thankfully, due to heroic fire-fighting there was amazingly little damage to the ship’s original material and the Conservation Project can continue as planned. With additional significant financial contributions from The Heritage Lottery Fund and Sammy Ofer, The Cutty Sark Conservation Project is back on course, due to re-open Spring 2011.
