Looks like there's some snow remaining on the flight deck. Does anyone have any idea when the ship is actually going to go into drydock? Cordially, Michael H. Standart Equal Opportunity Curmudgeon

Thanks for that MAB. I just checked that webcam which Denise posted and the ship is now in the drydock. From the low level of the water I can see as I post this, the ship is clearly resting on the blocks. Cordially, Michael H. Standart Equal Opportunity Curmudgeon

From The Navy Times: Intrepid could be a post-attack command center quote:NEW YORK— The aircraft carrier Intrepid — in the midst of an 18-month makeover — will return to Manhattan next fall prepared for double duty: its renewed status as a floating military museum, and a future as a potential command post in the event of another terrorist attack. “Upon its return, it will stand at the ready should we need her,” said Mark Mershon, head of the FBI’s New York office. The legendary World War II ship was retrofitted with an onboard facility that could double as an emergency operations center if needed, he said Thursday. The Intrepid is considered ideal for law enforcement because it could be immediately and easily converted into a full-fledged, secure auxiliary emergency operations post with air, sea and land capability, said Bill White, president of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.

Definately worth a read and it shows that even after 60 years, this ship can still offer important service! Cordially, Michael H. Standart Equal Opportunity Curmudgeon

From The Navy Times: Intrepid coming home to NYC in shipshape quote:NEW YORK — Almost two years after being pried ignominiously from the mud by a phalanx of huffing tugboats and towed off to a shipyard for a major overhaul, the historic aircraft carrier Intrepid is returning home. Freshly painted in naval “haze gray” and once again shipshape from stem to stern, the fabled survivor of Pacific war battles and five kamikaze suicide attacks will be towed up New York Harbor and slotted into its familiar Hudson River berth on Oct. 2.

Mr. Standart, Besides the USS Intrepid being back at its normal spot in midtown Manhattan having received its refit in Bayonne, my crew and I noticed there is a Navy vessel of similar size berthed just north of the Intrepid. My skipper said it was a Navy missile cruiser but didn't know if it was a museum like thing for like the Intrepid or if it was on active duty. It was a monolith of a ship, that's what I could say. Know anything about this? "I believe she's gone, Hardy." - William Murdoch to John Hardy

The only other naval vessel that's part of the Intrepid Museum is a sub called Growler, which is nothing close to being "of similar size" as Intrepid. Whatever it is you saw must have been there only temporarily; it's not part of the museum. MAB http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OceanicSteamNavigationCo/ http://www.greatships.net/

The one other ship that was part of the museum was the USS Edson. (See http://www.navsource.org/archives/05/946.htm ) It looks now as if she'll be moving on to a new home. Cordially, Michael H. Standart Equal Opportunity Curmudgeon

I hope it's someplace where it will be the prime attraction. My only recollection of the Edson as part of the Intrepid museum is people just looking at it while walking past after visiting the carrier. I don't specifically remember when the Edson left New York, but it was a couple of years (at least) before the Intrepid was moved away for refurbishing. Thanks to both of you for answering my question. According to the website stated above, the USS Edson is being moved to Wisconsin. Quite the trip. "I believe she's gone, Hardy." - William Murdoch to John Hardy

From The Navy Times: Bush marks Veterans Day on Intrepid quote:NEW YORK — President Bush thanked veterans Tuesday for serving their country, noting wistfully that he’ll “miss being commander in chief of such a fabulous group.” Bush marked his last Veterans Day as president with a visit to a New York pier that is home to the World War II aircraft carrier Intrepid, appearing before a crowd of thousands bundled on a pier against the windy November chill for the rededication ceremony of the USS Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum.
