From The Asia Times:

Toxic alert as US ship heads for India

quote:

BANGALORE - A ship of United States origin that is reportedly carrying toxic substances and headed for dismantling in India's ship-breaking yards, is caught in a storm. Environmentalists are up in arms over the ship not being detoxified at its port of origin in the US and want the ship to be sent back.

Comment: A bit redundant perhaps but the story does a nice recap of the events and skullduggery which led up to this.

>>And so where is "independence" today?<<

Haven't heard a thing though I doubt she's gone anywhere. Now that the ship is back in the spotlight, it would be hard to make a move without somebody knowing and saying something about it.

Frankly, I'm surprised that they haven't done a "Norway" with her and run her up on the beach, permission or not.

From The Times Of India:

It's official: Platinum II ship is toxic

quote:

NEW DELHI: The Union environment and forest ministry team sent to assess the toxic materials on-board the controversial ship Platinum II, anchored
in Indian waters near Alang for ship-breaking, has confirmed the vessel contains tonnes of toxins.

From The Hindu:

No radioactive material found on ship at Alang

quote:

NEW DELHI: The Central technical team sent to inspect Platinum-II, the ship that anchored at Bhavnagar Anchorage Point along the Alang coast in Gujarat last month, has concluded that the vessel is a passenger ship and not carrying any radioactive or hazardous waste in loose form or as cargo.

From The Deccan Herald:

Controversial ship has fake registration documents

quote:

Days after a Central team confirmed the presence of toxic chemicals on-board Platinum-II – a controversial ship that arrived at Alang ship-breaking yard last month – non-governmental organisations have claimed that the ship’s registration documents are fake.

Comment: Goodness, gracious, me! A ship hauled away illegally in the wake of some shady deals and which effectively disappears for 8 months turns up at a backwater breakers with faked documents! I'm shocked I tell you! Shocked!

From The Calcutta Telegraph:

‘Toxic’ ship barred

quote:

New Delhi/Ahmedabad, Nov. 9: The Union environment ministry today denied permission for US ship Platinum II to be broken, citing violations of US laws and other irregularities.

Comment: Don't be too surprised if this ship sinks under "Mysterious circumstances" somewhere at sea.

From Yahoo:

'Toxic' US ship off India coast in limbo: owner

quote:

NEW DELHI (AFP) – A leaking former US naval ship blocked from entering India's giant Alang breaking yard due to environmental concerns is in limbo after its owners said Wednesday they were unsure of where to take it.

Comment: So who is the owner? The spokesman in this story merely represents them without identifying them!
