From The Maritime Global Net:

ZODIAC DISPUTES MAIB REPORT

quote:

IN a highly unusual move for a company involved in a UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch inquiry, Zodiac Maritime Agencies is disputing the accuracy of the agency's report in to the structural failure of the MSC Napoli. For its part the MAIB is rejecting the criticism with a spokesman saying: “We are absolutely confident of the report.”

The United Kingdom’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) report into the MSC Napoli incident found that misdeclaration of the weights and contents of containers was a contributory factor to the accident.

No! The stern section was still there - stripped of all it's superstructure - when we spent a memorable week in Sidmouth in July. Memorable? It bucketed down with rain nearly every day. How different from the previous July, when we watched the explosive charges seperate the stern from the bow.

From BYM:

UK. Drilling success as removal of MSC Napoli stern progresses

quote:

The operation to remove the stern section of the container vessel MSC Napoli from the East Devon coast has passed its first milestone. The project team, led by Global Response Maritime B.V. of The Netherlands, has successfully positioned the first of a series of lifting chains under the wreck by underwater drilling. The first chain was positioned by a special subsea drilling system. This task marks the first successful, totally subsea, use of the drilling system in an offshore wreck removal. A novelty in the history of salvage.

We were in Sidmouth last week and saw the last bits being loaded - at a distance. The recovery vessels were still there on Saturday. I understand from the local paper that the seclusion zone will remain until the authorities have signed it off.

>>I understand from the local paper that the seclusion zone will remain until the authorities have signed it off.<<

I think that's reasonable. Shipwrecks tend to be messy affiars and there just might be some junk still there which could cause a problem. Better lawyer proof safe then sued sorry.
