Coast Guard cutter seizes $1.6M in marijuana

The crew of the medium-endurance cutter Venturous seized 2,500 pounds of marijuana during its recent 54-day patrol in the Caribbean Sea worth an estimated $1.6 million, according to the Coast Guard.

The haul was the service’s first big bust for the fiscal year that began Thursday.

Few details yet on deadly mid-air collision

As the Coast Guard plans a Friday memorial service, officials are offering few details on the possible causes for a mid-air collision between the service’s C-130 Hercules transport plane and a Marine Corps AH-1W Super Cobra off the coast of California that killed nine service members.

The Cobra was flying in formation with another Cobra helicopter and two transports on a nighttime training mission Friday when the accident happened. Another pilot saw the aircraft collide in a fireball.

Comment: Sam Halpern should appriciate this one. The article notes that pilots should keep their heads on a swivel in order to make sure that the flight is uneventful.

Somebody didn't do that.
