Recently during some research into my family history i came across some information regarding my great uncle T.V. Hill. it seems that he commanded both the RMS Aorangi and the RMS Niagra between 1927 and 1941. apart from a few pics I have found very little onfo on the aorangi however it seems that the niagra was quite historically important having been blamed for carrying the deadly 1918 flu virus to new zealand as well as being sunk off of australia by mines laid by the german raider orion. The gold (8 tons of it ) was subsequently salvaged both during and after the war by risdon beezley and there is even a book about the wreck. i am curious to find out more about the ship and if possible locate any pictures of her during my great uncles time in command. if anyone can help i would be grateful |

Niagara sank off Port of Whangarei, New Zealand. She had gold bullion aboard, which was part of a shipment from Britain to Pay USA for Lend Lease, I think. Although I dont have a book particularily about her or Aorangi, I do have books about the Union Steamship Co of NZ, so I may be able to glean some facts for you. So ask some questions. Cannot put up pix from books tho as they are copyright. |

There is a ship's bell from a Aorangi hanging in the Foyer of Manly Selective School in Sydney, Australia. I've no idea (yet) as to the origins of the bell, but am looking the passenger liner RMS Aorangi that run the Vancouver / Sydney run up to 1953. If you've got any more information about the Aorangi, I'd be grateful. cheers Andy |
