The weapon used was the Mk 48 Mod 7. If you go to the bottom of http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WTUS_PostWWII.htm you'll see a description of this weapon. The torpedo did it's usual work of exploding under the hull which produced a gas bubble which broke the ship's back.
