Rumor has it India wants to purchase the Kitty Hawk. I'd rather see her scuttled first. The name Tarawa holds a special meaning for Marines. Both Tarawa's served us well in WWII & Desert Storm. I'm sorry to see her go.

>>Rumor has it India wants to purchase the Kitty Hawk.<< That rumour has been floating around in one form or another for several years. So far, nothing has come of it and save for a few escort and light carriers from World War Two, the U.S. has never sold any of it's carriers to anybody. I doubt the Indians would be well served by Kitty Hawk in any event. The Russian vessel they're buying is newer and has way more service life remaining. Cordially, Michael H. From SignOnSanDiego.com: Ship was based here for 30 of its 39 years quote:From his folding chair on the pier, L.A. “Archie” Archibeque craned his neck, straining to see the red, white and blue commissioning pennant as it slid down the mast of the amphibious assault ship Juneau. The retired chief petty officer from Rancho Bernardo was the first enlisted sailor assigned to the ship nearly four decades ago, before it had even left its shipyard in Seattle. He had seen the pennant rise for the first time on a sunny day in 1969. Now he would see it lowered for the final time.

From The Navy Times: Deep-diving NR-1 wraps up its 40-year career quote:NORFOLK, Va. — Its oven was actually a toaster taken out of a P-3 Orion. It had no shower, and there were four racks for 11 sailors. The officer in charge slept on the deck behind the conn. And since the Nixon administration, the elite crew of the NR-1 could live on the bottom of the ocean for up to a month at a time. National Geographic magazine called it “The Navy’s Inner Space Shuttle,” and in many ways, the now retired nuclear-powered, deep-submergence boat capable of 3,000-foot dives was just that.
