An Airbus A320 leaving New York's LaGuardia airport became disabled this afternoon after losing power in both engines after a reported bird strike. The plane ditched in the Hudson River, and all on board were rescued thanks in large part to a rapid response by New York Waterways' commuter ferries. For more details check out http://www.nytimes.com/, http://www.wcbs880.com/, http://www.nbcnewyork.com/ or other NYC news outlets. For once, it seems, happy ferry news. There's some great surveillance camera video of the landing and the ferries' arrival on the NYT web site; look here. MAB http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OceanicSteamNavigationCo/ http://www.greatships.net/

I gather the pilot was ex-U.S. Air Force and has 40 years flying experience. He certainly put all that expertise to good use. |

An interesting detail is that the Airbus has a panic button. If you are going to land in the drink, you hit the button and all the little vents in the fuselage are closed, making it much more likely to float (if it holds together). The great thing about the landing was that the wings were kept level and a ground loop was avoided. Top flying by a top gun! >>Top flying by a top gun!<< And they apparently put down none too soon. The plane has been hoisted out of the water and there is quite a bit of fire damage. See http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28688215/ for the latest. Cordially, Michael H. Standart Equal Opportunity Curmudgeon

From Newsday: Maritime law could govern Flight 1549 crash suits quote:Any possible lawsuits stemming from the crash of US Airways Flight 1549 are likely to pose numerous challenging legal questions, the most unique being whether cases can be brought under federal maritime law, lawyers said. Manhattan maritime attorney John Hession, who handled the cases of many victims of the 2003 Staten Island Ferry crash, said maritime law could apply because the Airbus A320 crash landed in the Hudson River.
