From The Navy Times: CO of minesweeper fired for poor readiness quote:The commanding officer of the mine countermeasures ship Devastator was relieved of command Tuesday for not “maintaining ship readiness standards,” the Navy announced.
More at http://www.navytimes.com/news/2009/03/navy_devastator_cofired_030409w/ And CG: CO firing unrelated to cutter problems quote:The commander of the high endurance cutter Gallatin was fired Tuesday and temporarily reassigned to the Atlantic Area staff in Portsmouth, Va. Atlantic Area Commander Vice Adm. Robert Papp Jr. relieved Capt. Mike B. Christian from command, citing “loss of confidence in the ability to provide appropriate and adequate leadership.”
More at http://www.navytimes.com/news/2009/03/coastguard_cofired_030409/ Comment: With all the captains who have been getting sacked lately, it seemed appropriate to devote a special thread to the issue. With some of the maintainance problems of the fleet coming home to roost, I expect we'll be seeing more of this sort of thing. Cordially, Michael H. Standart Equal Opportunity Curmudgeon

>>MANAMA, Bahrain (NNS) -- The commanding officer of USS Hartford (SSN 768) was relieved of command April 14 due to loss of confidence.<< I read this yesterday and thought it a bit different that aside from the usual "Loss of confidence" statement, he elaborated that the investigation was not complete, but enough evidence existed to relieve the CO- It was his second command, but nothing came to the surface until an incident occurred. Personally, I'm amazed it took this long to happen. When a skipper messes up like this, he's usually gone within a few days. Cordially, Michael H. Standart Equal Opportunity Curmudgeon
