The Times, 25 April 1883 ROYAL VISIT TO THE IONIC --- On Monday afternoon the Prince of Wales paid a visit to the New Zealand Shipping Company's new chartered steamer Ionic, Captain E. O. Hallet, R.N., lying in the Royal Albert Dock. His Royal Highness, attended by the Hon. Tyrwhitt Wilson, arrived alongside the ship at 4 30, by special train from Liverpool-street. He was received by Captain Hallet, Mr. Cotter, chairman of the New Zealand Shipping Company, Messrs. Studholme and Larkworthy, directors, Mr. Strickland, London manager of the same company, and Mr. J. H. [sic; should be "T. H."] Ismay, managing director of the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company. The Ionic is the latest addition to the White Star Line, and has been chartered by the New Zealand Shipping Company, to form one of the line of steamers which they are now despatching from London direct to New Zealand every month. The Ionic was built by Messrs. Harland and Wolff of Belfast. She is 440ft. long, 44ft. broad, 32ft. deep, with a gross registered tonnage of 5,000, her engines, also manufactured by Messrs. Harland and Wolff, are of 3,000-horse power effective. The Prince made a close inspection of the vessel, paying special attention to the engine and refrigerating departments. His Royal Highness congratulated Captain Hallet in having command of so fine a vessel, and one so perfectly fitted in every particular. -30- MAB http://groups.yahoo.com/group/OceanicSteamNavigationCo/ http://www.greatships.net/
