A bit of a local mystery has been solved with the wreck of the steamer Glenelg found and dived by Southern Ocean Exploration on 28 June. She went down in big seas outside Lakes Entrance on a standard voyage from Bairnsdale, East Gippsland, to Melbourne, back in March 1900. Despite two lifeboats for the 34 on board, only three crew survived after drifting at sea in a lifeboat for a couple of days. There's a decent news item here: http://www.theage.com.au/national/significant-find-divers-discover-glenelg-shipwreck-20090703-d7la.html And Southern Ocean Exploration's page on her is here: http://www.southernoceanexploration.com/glenelg.php. From that account, Glenelg is in very good condition. So many books, so little time.

I wonder what that crash was that the survivors described? Are there any reefs in the vicinity of the wreck? Cordially, Michael H. Standart Equal Opportunity Curmudgeon
