From The State:

Economics and safety rule changes send QE2, Delta Queen and other ships into retirement

quote:

On Oct. 18, Queen Elizabeth 2 slipped out of its berth on the west side of Manhattan and sailed out of New York Harbor past the Statue of Liberty on its final voyage across the Atlantic.

On the Mississippi, the paddle-wheeler Delta Queen is churning up the "Big Muddy" between Cincinnati and Memphis before the national historic landmark ties up for the last time.

Already, the windjammers Mandalay, Polynesia and Yankee Clipper sit in Caribbean ports, seized as collateral from a bankrupt cruise line, and new safety rules make it unlikely they will ever unfurl their sails again.

From The Hellenic Shipping News:

IMO's Maritime Safety Committee to meet for 85th session

quote:

IMO's Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) is to meet at the Organization's London Headquarters for its 85th session, from 26 November to 5 December 2008. The packed agenda includes discussion on the Long Range Identification and Tracking (LRIT) System, the development of goal-based standards for new ship construction and the adoption of amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS).

From The Independent OnLine:

Book ship fights age and time to stay afloat

quote:

New international maritime safety regulations are forcing the world’s largest floating bookshop and oldest passenger liner, the MV Doulos, to the scrapyard.

The 94-year-old Malta-flagged ship, whose name means “servant” in Greek, would have to be decommissioned in 2010 if the ship owners do not get the ship refurbished to comply with the new regulations when they come into force.

Comment: This latest story on the Doulos is posted here because she is an obvious casualty of SOLAS 2010.

From Cruise Critic:

Scrap or Sell: Cruise Ships Impacted as SOLAS 2010 Approaches

quote:

For fans of classic cruise vessels, nothing quite gets the pulse racing like Queen Elizabeth 2. As the world's most famous ocean liner, cruising's grande dame was admired for her sleek silhouette, her powerful grace -- even through the choppiest of Atlantic waters -- and her war-time contributions.

But, with stringent new International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) guidelines taking effect on October 1, 2010 -- the crux being much stricter fire safety requirements -- Cunard was forced to retire the liner in November 2008.
