Hello all,

I have just accepted a call to do some survey work on some ships in the mothball fleet (unfortunatly the Indy isn't one of them).

I was wondering if anybody has some links to websites that have a vessel listing or pictures of some of the ships in the mothball fleet?? If you do please post here and let us all know.

Thanks in advance,

Erik

Erik,

Here's an aerial photo of a part of the fleet. I go by there frequently on my way to Sacramento.

So, I take it that most of these ships are about to sink. Most of the pictures I have seen show that the ships are in bad, bad condition. Perhaps it's time to check on my life insurance.

I'd say it's time to check your jogging shoes, Erik, there are a lot of ships, and decks to walk on. A local television program, "California's Gold," did a piece on the fleet. The ships look pretty old. Rusty, too. There are submarines, destroyers and the like, but mostly Liberty ships. The U.S.S. Iowa battleship is out there, somewhere.

Now now Erik, no fair trying to get out of your September get together by getting killed on us!

Seriously, most of the ships in that photo are old decommissioned warships that are awaiting their turn to go to the breakers or be expended as targets. I don't think you'll have to worry about them.
Cordially,

Has the status of this fleet changed much in the last 3 years?

I doubt the status has changed much at all beyond some book keeping. A lot of those ships really belong at the shipbreakers but getting a vessel scrapped can be rediculously difficult these days. You might want to peruse the Naval Vessels Register to find out the current status and location of a decommissioned naval vessel.
