Hi, everyone. I just acquired the May 18, 1953 issue of LIFE Magazine, which has a brief article about Titanic Survivors viewing the Premiere of the 1953 "Titanic" movie with Barbara Stanwyck and Clifton Webb. While the article is wonderful, something else struck me as equally amazing. A photo journal of the sinking of the British ferry, The Duke of York. Nine dramatic and extraordinary photos document the collision with the American freighter, Haiti Victory in the fog on the North Sea. Most of the passengers of the York were able to climb the rails to safety onto the deck of the Haiti Victory, the rest were taken off in lifeboats. One young man slept through it until he was thrown out of his bunk as the ship pitched over. He managed to climb to safety at the last minute, and is pictured running across the bow plates toward the Haiti Victory. 503 were saved, but five died in the collision. The Haiti Victory, her bow damaged, attempted in vain "to take the truncated 'Duke' in tow." The Duke lost its bow completely. I wish I had a scanner to show these amazing photos to you, but they're copyrighted pictures anyway. Check your local libraries or microfiches. Kyrila |
