Is there a White Star Line Tender docked on the North side of the Thames, just East of Waterloo Foot Bridge? I swear I saw one in April '98.

Nope. The only floating part of the White Star fleet is Nomadic's hull, currently at Le Havre.

There is a ship on the Themes named the Queen Mary. At first glance, I thought it was a White Star ship, but closer examination proved the funnel caps to be blue. Hope this helps!
My best :-)

I swear I saw a White Star tender. Next time I'm in Blighty I'm going back for another look. I was too busy drinking Hampstead dry on my last visit in March '01!

Jake, I don't see how it could be a White Star tender when the only one still around is the Nomadic. I'm looking at a photo of the Queen Mary on page 3 of the October 2003 issue of Ships Monthly, and at a glance, she bears an uncanny resemblance to the White Star boats. She now exists as a floating restaurant on the Thames.

Here's the TS Queen Mary on the Thames (and yes, she does make you do a double-take on first glance):

Besides, of course, HMS Belfast there are a few permanantly moored vessels on the Thames:

Wellington (I'm fond of this one - she's the livery hall for the Honourable Company of Master Mariners)

Hispaniola (formerly the Maid of Ashton, now a floating restaurant)

Tattershall Castle (Paddle steamer, formerly of the Humber, now a floating pub).

Is the NOMADIC complete? Or is she (sadly) just sitting there rusting like the UNITED STATES is in America?

Matthew,

Too bad the late "Nomadic in Danger" thread has gone to the bin, it would have prove useful to you...

Anyway, Nomadic had been docked on the Seine in Paris for about 30 years, until earlier this year when she was moved to Le Havre to be examined in dry-dock. During that moving process, her superstructure was cut out, though that superstructure itself was not the original one. Right now she is still berthed at Le Havre awaiting dry-dock examination to show if and how she could be restored. Only her hull and lower decks are preserved.

www.nomadic.fr.st (french site but easy to navigate through anyway) has the most recent pictures of her in Le Havre.

It's the Queen Mary. Now, the only excuse to go back to London is the pubs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is an aged tender (size) vessel currently moored in St. Katherine's Dock (London), with a painted metal white star attached to it's bows. Perhaps this is what you saw Jake? Any resemblance to a White Star Line vessel is purely coincidental.

Hallo John! Always good to see you here. The Queen Mary is certainly the vessel to which Jake referred, but you have me intrigued by the reference to the vessel in St Katherine's Dock. I don't recall seeing it there - is it a new arrival, or did I miss the star? One of the curators of the Docklands Museum is currently in Sydney - perhaps I'll ask her!

Inger, working on the assumption that a picture is greater than thousand words, I have tried to upload an image of the vessel in question. Unfortunately the ET website will not allow me to do it as this exceeds the permitted memory space. Anyway, if you are able to find anything out from your museum friend the ship is called 'Leonie' (no, not Leonic).
Regards, John
