From The Navy Newsstand: USS George Washington Successfully Completes T-FEP quote:USS GEORGE WASHINGTON, At Sea (NNS) -- Sailors on board USS George Washington (CVN 73) successfully completed a Tailored-Final Evaluation Problem (T-FEP) July 23, receiving an overall grade of excellent. Afloat Training Group Western Pacific (ATGWP) was on board George Washington for several days evaluating and training GW's shipboard training teams on their ability to effectively instruct and test Sailors on all aspects of fighting the ship, including combating actual damage control casualties, properly training new repair locker members, and numerous levels of technical training.

The exchanges helped strengthen cooperation between the U.S. Navy and the AFP, with their importance underscored by GW being the first U.S. aircraft carrier to visit Manila in more than 13 years.

From The Navy Newsstand: GW CSG Begins Training with Nimitz CSG quote:USS GEORGE WASHINGTON, At Sea (NNS) -- USS George Washington (CVN 73) began its participation in joint aircraft carrier operations with USS Nimitz (CVN 68) in the Western Pacific Ocean Aug. 30. The goal of the joint operation is to practice integrating the operations of embarked Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5 with Nimitz's embarked CVW-11, said Cmdr. Pete Walczak, GW's combat direction center officer.

From The Navy Newsstand: GW CSG Completes Inaugural Summer Deployment, Returns to Yokosuka quote:YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) -- The George Washington Carrier Strike Group (GW CSG) completed their inaugural summer deployment Sept. 3, returning to their forward-deployed home at Fleet Activities Yokosuka. The GW CSG, commanded by Rear Adm. Kevin M. Donegan, is comprised of CVW-5, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15, and the guided-missile cruisers USS Shiloh (CG 67) and USS Cowpens (CG 63).

From The Navy Newsstand: GW CSG Completes Bilateral Exercise with ROK Navy quote:USS GEORGE WASHINGTON, At Sea (NNS) -- The George Washington Carrier Strike Group (GW CSG) completed a bilateral exercise with the Republic of Korea (ROK) Oct. 16. Beginning Oct. 10, embarked ROK Navy liaison officers and Sailors worked alongside Sailors on board USS George Washington (CVN 73), the Navy's only permanently forward-deployed aircraft carrier. According to GW Operations Officer Cmdr. Anthony Calandra, the focus of the exercise was to exchange ideas and operating procedures, so that both navies are better prepared to work together in the event of a crisis.

Crew members fought for six hours to free four sailors trapped in an aviation fuel pumping room. Intense heat caused team after team to turn back after battling down the nearly vertical ladders in the trunk space that led to the pump room deep within the hull.
