Hi all.

I have been asked by a friend to track down the location of a painting called (allegedly) "The Wreck Of The Rhone."

The painting details the loss of RMS Rhone in the British Virgin Islands during a hurricane in 1867. The artists name is unknown. It was thought that the painting was held at the Maritime Museum, Greenwich, UK, but they have no knowledge of it.

The wreck is considered one of the best dives in the BVI. One of many sites providing information on the ship is: http://www.wrecksandreefs.co.uk/ds_bvi_rmsrhone.htm

I'd be very grateful for any information that can be provided on the painting.

Thanks, in anticipation,
Paul.

Oh, ayup! This is one of the wrecks I'd put on my list to visit if I was in the BVI. It's a natural movie set, and was put to that use for underwater scenes in 'The Deep'.

I'll ask around, Paul - I'd be interested in seeing the painting if it does turn up.

Here's a pic of the Rhone before the disaster.

Thanks Boz.

I've now discovered that the painting may be called: "The Rhone on the Rocks". I've found a few other pictures but I still can't track this one down though!

Paul.

"The Deep" (starring the ill fated Rhone) was one of my favorite films, and the diving images, plus the neck snapping scene, sparked my interest in shipwreck exploration...

Is this the Rhone Painting in question?

This picture was used in the first edition of the book "the Royal Mail Steamer Rhone" by George & Luana Marler

Hello Gayla.

Thanks very much for your post. I will drop an email to my friend to see if this is the picture he was after and let you know!
