On September 21st, the navy retired the last active Spruance Class destroyer. These ships were an important part of the fleet from the mid 70s through the present and they were the basis for the Kidd, and Ticonderoga Classes as well as having a great influence on the Burke (DDG-51 Class). Great ships, they will be missed- http://www.news.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=20284 Honjitsu tenki seiro naredomo nami takashi-... Akiyama Saneyuki

Curiously enough, the ship hasn't been striken from the Naval Vessels register as yet. I suppose that will change in a couple of days. Keep an eye on her entry at http://www.nvr.navy.mil/nvrships/details/DD985.htm I wonder if she'll find a new life in somebody else's navy? Cordially, Michael H. Standart Equal Opportunity Curmudgeon

As of now, only Fletcher and O'Bannon are scheduled for transfer (to Pakistan) The entire Kidd Class is going to Taiwan. In the US Navy, Paul F. Foster is in commission special as a test ship at Point Hueneme for the missile test center. Arthur W. Radford has been transferred to Northrop Grumman, last I heard she will receive a DDX type superstructure as a test ship for the DDX program. The rest have been being expended as targets at a high rate- I wonder if the first flight of Ticonderogas will be held for possible transfer to Taiwan at a future date? Ticonderoga has been striken but is being retained as a logistics support asseet. (A windy way of saying "Spare parts source." Dittos for the Valley Forge. The Yorktown and the Vincennes are listed as "To be disposed of." Whether or not Taiwan will have a crack at any of them is anybody's guess as the politics of the question...with China's inevitable objections...are a bit dicey. Cordially, Michael H. That means Thomas S. Gates will be next and all the baseline 0 and 1 ships will be gone- I wonder how long before the later ships start to go? Will be spending my weekend working on my RC Flower Class corvette, HMS Campanula- Honjitsu tenki seiro naredomo nami takashi-... Akiyama Saneyuki

>>I wonder how long before the later ships start to go? << Another ten to fifteen years I suppose. These are all VLS equipped vessels whereas the Baseline 0 ship's used the older style launchers that are no longer supported in the fleet. Cordially, Michael H. Standart Equal Opportunity Curmudgeon
