RMS Titanic
The Titanic was a British registered four funnelled ocean liner built for the transatlantic passenger and mail service between Southampton and New York.
Constructed at the Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland she was, at the time of her maiden voyage, the largest vessel afloat.
On April 10th 1912 the Titanic set sail from Southampton with 2,200 passengers and crew, four days later the Titanic collided with an iceberg and sank. 1500 people died and 700 survived. This website attempts to tell their story and that of the great ship with which their fate would be inextricably linked.
It is since Titanic was lost.

History
According to legend the Titanic was conceived at a meeting between Lord Pirrie of Harland & Wolff and Bruce Ismay, Chairman of the White Star Line.
The vessels would forsake speed for increased safety and comfort. While millionaire passengers would grab headlines, vastly increased steerage capacity and accommodation for the growing middle class would drive economic success.
After a construction period of nearly three years the Titanic, commanded by veteran Captain Edward John Smith, departed in Southampton on 10th April 1912 never to return.

Design and Engineering
The Titanic designed and constructed at the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
She was 882 feet 9 inches in length and 92 feet in breadth. Her gross tonnage was 46,328 tons. Three propellers were driven by two four-cylinder, triple-expansion, inverted reciprocating steam engines and one low-pressure Parsons turbine. Steam was provided by 25 double-ended and 4 single-ended Scotch-type boilers fired by 159 coal burning furnaces that gave her a theoretical top speed of 23 knots.

After 97 years, the R.M.S. Titanic has finally docked in New York City. On June 24, 2009 Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition opened at the Discovery Times Square Exposition for a limited engagement. Located in the heart of Times Square in the former printing press room of The New York Times, the 12,500 sq. ft. exhibition features the largest collection of Titanic artifacts in the world.

Exclusive footage of the final video interview with Millvina Dean, the last survivor of the sinking of the Titanic. Belfast artist, the Rev Keith Drury, recorded this brief interview with Millvina when he visited her in Southampton just a few weeks ago as part of a project to help raise funds towards her nursing care. Sadly, Millvina died soon afterwards.

The funeral has taken place in England of the last survivor of the Titanic disaster, Millvina Dean. The private service, attended by family and friends, took place at Southampton Crematorium, the funeral directors confirmed.

Mourners are due to gather in Southampton to say a final farewell to Millvina Dean, the last remaining survivor of the Titanic disaster, today. Millvina, who died aged 97, was the youngest passenger on board the illfated White Star liner when the ship left on her maiden voyage from Southampton in April, 1912 The funeral service at Southampton Crematorium was set to include the seafarers' hymn Eternal Father, Strong to Save, which includes the famous chorus: For those in peril on the sea.

Haitian Joseph Phillippe Lemercier Laroche is not mentioned among the 1912 press descriptions of the Titanic disaster, but he is the only black man who was aboard the luxury ship when it hit an iceberg and went down on April 15, 1912, killing 1,500 passengers.
