PEERAGE FOR SIR JOHN BIGHAM

The King has been pleased to approve the appointment of Sir Samuel
Thomas Evans, K.C., to be President of the Probate, Divorce, and
Admiralty Division of the High Court of Justice, in the place of the
Right Hon. Sir John Charles Bigham.

The King has been further pleased to confer the dignity of a Baron of
the United Kingdom upon the Right Hon. Sir John Charles Bigham on the
occasion of his resignation of the position of President of the Probate,
Divorce, and Admiralty Division.

The King has been pleased to approve the appointment of Mr. Rufus Daniel
Isaacs, K.C., to be Solicitor-General, in the place of Sir Samuel Thomas
Evans, K.C.

Sir John Charles Bigham was born in 1840. Called to the Bar by the
Middle Temple in 1870, he became the leader of the Northern Circuit and
acquired a large practice at the Common Law. He took silk In 1883 and
was made a Bencher of his Inn three years later. He entered Parliament
in 1895 as a Liberal Unionist for the Exchange Division of Liverpool,
and was appointed two years afterwards a Judge of the High Court. He
succeeded Lord Gorell as President of the Probate, Divorce, and
Admiralty Division last year. Sir John Bigham married, in 1871,
Georgina, daughter of the late Mr. John Rogers, of Liverpool. His elder
son is Captain Clive Bigham, C.M.G., who has served in the Guards, in
the Diplomatic Service, as a war correspondent, and in various official
positions. He married Mary, second daughter of the late Sir Horace
Seymour, and has issue.
