Swearing-In of Mr. Justice Bigham
The Times
(Before MR. JUSTICE MATHEW, MR. JUSTICE WILLS, MR. JUSTICE LAWRANCE, MR. JUSTICE WRIGHT, MR. JUSTICE BRUCE, and MR. JUSTICE KENNEDY.)
In the absence of the Lord Chief Justice, Mr. Justice Mathew presided in this Court to-day at the swearing-in of the newly-appointed Judge, Mr. Justice Bigham. Several members of the Bar were present, but the attendance would doubtless have been larger if it had been publicly announced that the ceremony was to take place. The members of the Court having taken their places, the new Judge entered the Court attired in full-bottom wig and scarlet robes. He remained standing on the bench as he repeated the words of the oath, which was read by the Master of the Crown Office (Master Mellor). His Lordship then kissed the book, and received the congratulations of his brother Judges. Their Lordships at the conclusion of the ceremony proceeded to their respective Courts for the transaction of the business of the day. Mr. Justice Bigham sat at nisi prius for the trial of non-jury actions.
