MAJOR ARCHIBALD BUTT

New-York, April 17.

President Taft sent messages everywhere he could, so anxious was he about the fate of his aide-de-camp major Archibald Butt. Butt was on his return journey from Rome where Taft had sent him on a special mission to meet the pope and king Victor Emmanuel.
We know that among the topics he talked about at the Vatican was the difficulty roused by Mr. Farley, archbishop of New-York, and Mr. O’Donnell, archbishop of Boston, both becoming cardinals.
From Rome, he recently wired that the Sovereign Pontiff entrusted him with an important communication for the president.
His death is felt as a hard blow in Washington.
When American troops temporarily occupied Cuba, Major Butt proved that he was a born soldier. He was single. As he was staying in Italy, there were rumours about his marriage. But he nicely refuted it, stating that he would rather be the only one to know how the novel of his life ended.
You will have to admit that the end of the novel is particularly sad.

LE MAJOR ARCHIBALD BUTT
New-York, 17 avril.
