The morning after the multi-collision debacle in New York harbor, passengers are evacuated in calm and orderly fashion from the vessel, which lay perhaps 100 yards from the beach. In 1935 the view would be considerably different, as passengers and crew fought with lifeboats frozen to their davits and confusing evacuation orders that sent some people to their boat stations on the Promenade Deck only to see their boats -filled from the boat deck -lowered past them without stopping, while in other cases passegners were directed to the Boat Deck only to see their boats hanging one deck below and being filled from the Promenade.
