Nieuw Amsterdam : Grand Hall, 1938.
The Grand Hall has been intelligently decorated in tones of gray to enhance fully the glamorous effect of exquisitely gowned women and their escorts in evening dress. It extends two decks high and measuring seventy three feet long and fifty two feet wide. During the day, twenty gigantic panels of engraved glass flood the hall with flattering filtered light; at night their deeply etched heroic figures take on a strange ethereal quality. The suspended moulded aluminum ceiling and two immense murals conceal soft artificial lighting. For gala occasions, the chairs, tables and carpet in the center of the Hall may be removed to reveal an expansive polished parquet dance floor.
