Maj, Butt, a devout Episcopalian, chose the Celtic cross. There is a plaque on each side of the base.

: On the back: A devoted son and brother, an efficient officer, a loyal friend, who in Death, as in Life, served faithfully God and Humanity.

This stone is erected by his brothers to mark as sacred the spot he had chosen as his final resting place.

Front of base: To the Memory of Archibald Willingham Butt Major, U.S. Army Military Aide to the President 1908-1912

Son of Joshua Willingham and Pamela Robertson Butt

Born September 26, 1865 in Augusta, Georgia Lost at Sea April 15, 1912 when the steamship Titanic with 1500 souls aboard sank in the Atlantic Ocean

Greater Love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. John XVII
