Maj, Butt, a devout Episcopalian, chose the Celtic cross. There is a plaque on each side of the base.

: On the back: A devoted son and brother, an efficient officer, a loyal friend, who in Death, as in Life, served faithfully God and Humanity.

This stone is erected by his brothers to mark as sacred the spot he had chosen as his final resting place.
