James Clinch Smith, a brother-in-law of the late Stanford White, is well known as a sportsman and in society circles both in this city and in Paris. Until May, 1911, when he returned to this country to reopen his old homestead at Smithtown, L. I., Mr. Smith has spent most of his time in Paris, making frequent trips here. One of these trips brought him to New York a few days before Stanford White was shot by Harry K. Thaw, and Mr. Smith was present at the time of the tragedy. He was called upon to testify at the trial.

Mr. Smith was born at Smithtown and inherited the homestead and extensive estates there from his father, the late Judge J. Lawrence Smith. He has a fine stable of polo ponies, running horses and trotters and built a race track. He married Miss Bertha Barnes of Chicago.
