NEW PROVIDENCE, N. J., Oct. 9---John Hardy of 71 Gales Drive, who was chief steward of second class accommodations on the Titanic, died on Wednesday at the home of his son, Ronald M. Hardy, in Maplewood. His age was 82.

Mr. Hardy was born in London and served as chief steward for fifteen years with the Cunard and White Star Lines, and later for twenty years for the United States Lines. When the Titanic, on her maiden voyage, struck an iceberg and sank in April, 1912, he was on the second from last lifeboat to get away. He retired in 1940.

He leaves also another son, Peter; two daughters, Mrs. Cyril Lister of Southampton, England, and Mrs. James H. Crockett of Rochester, N. Y., and a brother, William of London.
