American People Can Learn Lesson From Major’s Life, Is Captain’s Opinion

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind., April 22---Major Archibald Butt did not give his life in vain in the Titanic disaster, if the American people will take the lesson of his life into their lives, is the opinion of Capt. James F. Ryan, in charge of the local army recruiting station, who was a personal friend of President Taft’s aid. Captain Ryan declared that the American people should consider Major Butt’s life as exemplifying the highest ideals of American citizenship.

“I know no words that will express my deep sorrow over the death of Archie Butt,” said Captain Ryan, “for I had learned to know him as an ideal American. His loss is one which can never be recompensed. Yet it seems that, after all, the major may have had to pay the price of his life to teach the American people to value the things in life which are really worth while.”
