Michael Rogers - 'Steward to the Marconi Department'
Michael Rogers was a 27 year old steward from Dublin, generally
resident between voyages at the family home of Mr Thomas Harris at
13, Greenhill Avenue, Winchester. Mrs Harris had been a close friend
of Michael's mother, and following the death of his own parents he and
his younger sister were encouraged to regard the Harris' home as their
own and Michael became engaged to one of the Harris' daughters.
Though not yet married, he gave the Harris' Greenhill Avenue address
when he signed on for the Titanic. He had previously served on the
Adriatic and Olympic, and it is interesting that he was said to have
been 'steward to the Marconi department of the Titanic'. I assume
this means he served meals in the saloon for the wireless operators
and postal workers (and possibly also in the adjacent saloon for
maids & valets) on C Deck.
The Harris family suffered also the loss of their own son Edward,
18 years old, who was an assistant pantryman on the Titanic.
