Alfred Charles Shiers was born in Devonport, Plymouth, Devon on 11th June 1886, the son of Alfred and May Shiers. His siblings were Frederick (b.1888) and Michael (b.1890). Shortly following his birth the family left Devon and settled at Southampton, Hampshire.
The 1901 UK census has the family living in Southampton and Alfred jnr, now aged 14 was described as a dock labourer.
Ten years later Alfred is living at 5 Peel Street and signs on Titanic as a fireman on a monthly wage of £6.
