"On the afternoon of June 20th we entered the American War Zone and on the afternoon of the 21st a red light followed by a column of smoke which was believed to be the torching of an oil burning vessel was seen. Drawing nearer it was found to be that the light and smoke were signals for help and finally the following signal was caught: "We were torpedoed three days ago, please pick us up." The survivors were taken aboard and were found to be from the H.M.S. Dwinsk. The party contained the Commanding officer, Lieut. Commander Nelson and 45 members of the crew including two quartermasters of the U.S. Navy."Â
