| telegraph.co.uk | TITANIC, ITV1, PREVIEW Few TV dramas come so freighted with expectation as ITV1's four-parter Titanic. Not only does it commemorate the 100th anniversary of the world’s most dwelt-upon disaster but, scripted by Julian Fellowes, it invites comparison, inevitably, with Downton Abbey, as well as James Cameron’s vastly popular 1997 blockbuster Titanic. This opening episode begins with the embarkation of passengers in Southampton, and ends with their mid-Atlantic flight to the lifeboats two nights later. In between we meet a large cast of characters: in first class, Hugh, Earl of Manton (Linus Roache) and his rebellious daughter Lady Georgiana Grex (Perdita Weeks); in second class, Manton’s Irish lawyer John Batley (Toby Jones) and his firebrand wife Muriel (Maria Doyle Kennedy); and thereon down through the social strata to steerage passengers and crew. There are lots of rich Americans – Astors, Wideners, even a Guggenheim. But what’s lacking is any sense of drama, even of being aboard a ship, or, when catastrophe strikes, much air of urgency. That said, a glimpse of episode two – which goes back to the ship’s beginnings – promises more drama and depth. ... |

| guardian.co.uk | A TITANIC FEAST No doubt it says something rather sick about me that when a friend mentioned it was possible to buy a book of recipes from the kitchens of the Titanic, I felt, for the very first time, a stirring of interest in the doomed liner. In the past, I've never quite "got" the Titanic. Last summer, I travelled to Hungary to see the set for Julian Fellowes's forthcoming series about the ship (the drama will mark the 100th anniversary of its sinking, which falls next year). But even faced with a vast replica, I found myself wondering why it is this particular disaster that resonates.... |

| Sydney Morning Herald | TITANIC BIRTH DRAMA IS PROTRACTED LABOUR Despite some flaws, this serves as a companion piece to James Cameron's 1997 film Titanic, which follows at 8.40pm and dramatises the final hours of the most famous cruise liner in history (excluding, of course, our own beloved Fairstar).Birth of a Legend promises a wealth of archival material, but the problem with documentaries about the Titanic is that no matter how new they look, you get the feeling you've seen it all before (and if you've been near a TV set in the past decade, you probably have). Every new documentary becomes an increasingly anemic duplicate of the one before, like a brass rubbing that has been worn down until there is nothing left.... |
