It said the Naval Service came across the vessel surveying some 25 miles west of the Blasket islands, in Co Kerry on August 2nd. In between we meet a large cast of characters: in first class, Hugh, Earl of Manton (Linus Roache) and his rebellious daughter Lady Georgiana Grex (Perdita Weeks); in second class, Manton’s Irish lawyer John Batley (Toby Jones) and his firebrand wife Muriel (Maria Doyle Kennedy); and thereon down through the social strata to steerage passengers and crew. There are lots of rich Americans – Astors, Wideners, even a Guggenheim. But what’s lacking is any sense of drama, even of being aboard a ship, or, when catastrophe strikes, much air of urgency.
