| The Times | TITANIC AND THE LUSITANIA DISASTERS REVEAL DIFFERENCE IN SURVIVAL INSTINCTS Almost 100 years after the Titanic and the Lusitania sank in the North Atlantic, the contrasting fates of their passengers have helped to explain how altruism can take over from the selfish instinct to save oneself. A scientific comparison of the two maritime disasters, which together claimed more than 2,700 lives just three years apart, has suggested that self-preservation can be trumped by social pressure to stand back while others are rescued, but only when people have sufficient time to think. ... |

| telegraph.co.uk | TITANIC, ITV1, PREVIEW Few TV dramas come so freighted with expectation as ITV1's four-parter Titanic. Not only does it commemorate the 100th anniversary of the world’s most dwelt-upon disaster but, scripted by Julian Fellowes, it invites comparison, inevitably, with Downton Abbey, as well as James Cameron’s vastly popular 1997 blockbuster Titanic. This opening episode begins with the embarkation of passengers in Southampton, and ends with their mid-Atlantic flight to the lifeboats two nights later. In between we meet a large cast of characters: in first class, Hugh, Earl of Manton (Linus Roache) and his rebellious daughter Lady Georgiana Grex (Perdita Weeks); in second class, Manton’s Irish lawyer John Batley (Toby Jones) and his firebrand wife Muriel (Maria Doyle Kennedy); and thereon down through the social strata to steerage passengers and crew. There are lots of rich Americans – Astors, Wideners, even a Guggenheim. But what’s lacking is any sense of drama, even of being aboard a ship, or, when catastrophe strikes, much air of urgency. That said, a glimpse of episode two – which goes back to the ship’s beginnings – promises more drama and depth. ... |

| Titanic Stories | TITANIC FASHION, AN EDWARDIAN MAKEOVER Titanic Stories For first class passengers on board Titanic, status was everything. Where you sat at dinner, the size of your suite and who you played cards with all marked out your position in society. But perhaps the most visual way to make your social statement was by what you wore. For the ladies in particular, an ensemble by the latest on trend designer could put you ahead of the game. You certainly could not be seen at dinner in the same dress as the night before. It was an era when fashion trends were moving quickly and even amongst the older generation there was a need to be seen to embrace modernity. One fashion faux-pas could knock you down the social ladder. It was a complicated game to play.... |
