Passport to Perdition

Thomas Silva Letter

Dearest Eff,

After a long hard journey I arrived in New York on the 29th of April. The trip was certainly a long one and I was glad indeed when it was over. The first thing that I endeavoured to do was to try to get my passport.
After trying terribly hard, going here and there, in Brooklyn and New York, I saw it was absolutely out of the question. I therefore had to take the train and go down to Washington, where I finally succeeded in getting it!!
I called on William Ray & Co in New York, and Mr Steinhauser, who is very well known here, got me a $250 stateroom at the minimum price. He invited me out to his apartments last night where we had a long conversation regarding business, and gave me letters etc. to various people. He certainly has a swell place out on Riverside Drive.
I am now aboard ship. It’s filled up to its capacity, so there are others who feel that it is safe. I understand that when the ship gets within the danger zone, a convoy of their destroyers escort her to Liverpool.
I certainly miss you, dear, and the little fellow. I will do my best to get back early.
With all my love,
As ever,
Tom.
