PHILADELPHIA, June 6

Thomas D. M. Cardeza, explorer and art collector, died today in his home at the age of 77.
Mr. Cardeza served on the board of directors of the old Fidelity Trust Company and its successor, the Fidelity-Philadelphia Trust Company, from 1922 until his resignation in March, 1951. His maternal grandfather, Thomas Drake, industrialist, was an organizer of the company in 1866.
In April, 1912, he and his mother, the late Mrs. James W. M. Cardeza, a patroness of the arts, survived the sinking of the Titanic, which went down in the North Atlantic after striking an iceberg on her maiden voyage. They were returning from Hungary.
His mother, who died at her residence in the Germantown section in 1939, was a big game hunter in Africa and Asia. Her son made four expeditions to Africa.
