Sig. Abele Rigozzi

Abele Rigozzi, 22, was born in 1890 in Switzerland. His family lived in Aquila, Blenio, Kanton Ticino, Switzerland. Together with his friends Alessandro Pedrini and Mario Zanetti he was employed by Luigi Gatti to sail on the Titanic 1, his first ship. His wages were £2 2s per month (plus tips). He signed-on to the Titanic on 6th April 1912 and he began work the same day. At this time his address was given as 6 Titchfield Street, London.

Rigozzi died in the sinking. His body was recovered by the Mackay-Bennett (#115) and was buried at sea. When his body was recovered it was found to be wearing a black armband. He had been in mourning for his father who died in February 1912.

Until now there has been no memorial to Abele Rigozzi in the graveyard at Aquila. But in 2002 a new stone will be erected that will bear his photograph.

Notes
1. Rigozzi was apparently hired as a replacement for a man called Giulietto Biucchi, who, for reasons unknown, was unable to join the ship.
