Mrs Catherine Bourke
Mrs John Bourke (Catherine "Kate" McHugh), 32, was born in Tawnagh, Co Mayo. Catherine had previously lived in America. She was a relative of Katherine McGowan, another third class passenger on the Titanic.
Catherine boarded the Titanic at Queenstown as a third class passenger (ticket number 364849, £15, 10s) together with her husband, John and his sister Mary Bourke. They travelled with a number of others from the country surrounding Crossmolina (see Katherine McGowan). Their destination was travelling to Chicago, Illinois.
On the night of the sinking she is reported to have suggested that the 14-strong in her group kneel in prayer and recite the Rosary. Catherine did find her way, with Mary, into lifeboat 16 and there was still the possibility of her survival. However, she refused to leave her husband and, subsequently, she lost her life in the disaster. Her body, if recovered, was never identified.
