Mr George Fox Hosking
Mr George Fox Hosking, 36, was born in Shaldon, Devonshire, the son of Thomas Richard Hosking (Master Mariner) and Mary Elizabeth Hocking (née Strang). George was baptised at Ringmore Church, Shaldon, Devon on 30 November 1875. He was brother to Thomas Hosking, William Champion Hosking, Bessie Strang Hosking and Helena Christina Hocking.Hosking lived first at 33 The Green, Shaldon and later 17 The Green with his family. He was educated at Teignmouth Grammar School. On leaving school he was apprenticed to A W Robertson & Co of Royal Albert Dock, London.
His wife was Ada Alice, they had 3 children, Iris May (b.1905), George Thomas (b.1907) and William Bock (b.1910). In 1912 the family were living at 28 Avenue Road, Itchen, Southampton.
He served on the following vessels: Flintshire. RM Steam Packet (1 1/2 years), 2nd Engineer on Trelosk. Then on the Georgia. He served in a non-permenant position on White Star ships such as the Athenic and Teutonic. He joined permenantly in 1904 as fourth engineer on the Bovic followed by the Republic. He served as senior third engineer aboard the Olympic before being transferred to the Titanic. He held a first class certificate of competency.
Hosking died in the sinking, his body was not recovered.
