Miss Helen Monypeny Newsom, 19, was born 30 December 1892, in Columbus, Ohio the daughter of Logan C. and Sarah "Sallie" Newsom. She had a brother William Monypeny Newsom. After Logan's death Mrs Newsom remarried to Richard L. Beckwith.

Miss Newsom boarded the Titanic at Southampton with her mother and stepfather. She occupied cabin D-47. By a happy "coincidence" Karl Howell Behr, a former classmate of hers, boarded at Cherbourg. In fact, part of the reason he was on the Titanic was to continue his courtship of Miss Newsom. Mrs Beckwith had been attempting to discourage the relationship and had taken Miss Newsom on a "Grand Tour" of Europe to separate them for a time. It did not work as Mr Behr invented a business trip to Europe and arranged to book passage on the Titanic for his return to America.

Behr and the Beckwiths were all rescued in lifeboat 5. Some newspapers later reported that Behr had proposed to Helen in the lifeboat.

In March, 1913, just short of a year after the disaster, Behr and Miss Newsom were married in the Church of the Transfiguration. The couple had 4 children; three sons, Karl H. Jr., Peter, and James, and a daughter, Sally Behr.

After Karl Behr's death in 1949 Helen married one of his best friends and tennis partners, Dean Mathey (b. November 23, 1890, d. April 1972, Princeton). Helen died in Princeton, New Jersey in 1965 and is buried in a private family plot.
