Mr James McGrady

Mr James McGrady, 27, was born around 1895 [1], the son of James McGrady (railway worker) and Ann Higgins. James’ father died before he was born and his mother later remarried to a local farmer, Tom Savage. At the age of 16, James McGrady went to sea.

When he signed-on to the Titanic, on 6 April, 1912 he gave his address as the Platform Tavern, (Southampton). His last ship had been the Oceanic. As a first class steward [2] he received monthly wages of £3 15s.

McGrady died in the sinking, his body was later recovered, around 25 May 1912, by the steamship Algerine [3].

The body was transferred to the Florizel and returned to Halifax, Nova Scotia on 11 June 1912, and it was buried along with other Titanic victims at Fairview Lawn Cemetery.

McGrady's was the last body to be recovered, it was listed as #330 but, in fact, only 328 bodies were recovered.

Notes
1. When he signed on he gave his birthplace as County Queenstown. Stephen Cameron (1998) gives his birthplace as Lissamore, Crossgar, County Down.
2. Cameron (1998) lists him as a Fireman.
3. Cameron (1998) lists the recovery ship as the Montmagny.
